Florida International Air Show returning in Charlotte County

CHARLOTTE COUNTY, Fla. — After a two-year hiatus, the Florida International Air Show is finally making its return to Punta Gorda in November with a premier headliner, the Thunderbirds.

The three-day event is coming back to Charlotte County, featuring the United States Air Force’s premier jet demonstration team, the Thunderbirds, as its closing headliner.

The Florida International Air Show (FIAS) is a nonprofit corporation completely run by volunteers. It provides an opportunity for attendees to learn more about aviation, space, and military services.

According to Director Dana Carr, the last Air Show happened two years ago.

Due to the COVID-19 pandemic and runway renovations after Hurricane Ian, the previous two shows were canceled.

“We’re glad to be back stronger than ever,” Carr said.

Carr said they are anticipating this year’s to be one of the largest Florida International Air Shows yet.

They are prepared to have parking for 8,000 cars — and expect 15,000 people in attendance.

The show is weeks away, but tickets are selling out quickly.

However, that money is going right back into the community through local charities.

According to FIAS, the Air Show has distributed over $3 million to Southwest Florida working charities since its conception.

During the show, FIAS provides multiple benefits to the community through direct charitable donations and fundraising opportunities.

Although ticket purchases do not generate any profit, Tourism Director Sean Doherty said this is one of the signature events for Charlotte County and a significant economic impact generator.

“It generates usually anywhere between four to over five million dollars of economic impact for the destination,” he said.

Doherty said this impact stems from people traveling to Charlotte County from outside destinations.

From eating at local restaurants, staying in hotels, or spending money in general, the Florida International Air Show is a great local economic asset.
