Naples woman faces charges for misconduct in connection to Jan. 6 Capitol riot
The Federal Bureau of Investigation arrested a Naples woman on Feb. 28 for her involvement and misconduct during the breach of the U.S. Capitol on Jan. 6, 2021.
Lin Marie Carey, 56, of Naples, faces the following charges: obstruction of an official proceeding, a felony, and misdemeanor offenses of knowingly entering or remaining in any restricted building or grounds without lawful authority, disorderly and disruptive conduct in a restricted building or grounds, disorderly conduct in a Capitol building, parading, picketing, and demonstrating in a Capitol building.
What happened on Jan. 6, 2021?
During a joint session of the U.S. Congress affirming the presidential election results, supporters of former U.S. President Donald Trump attacked the United States Capitol Building in Washington, D.C., in the wake of his defeat.
In the 37 months since the siege, more than 1,313 arrests have been made in nearly all 50 states and the District of Columbia. Over 469 have been charged with assaulting or impeding law enforcement, a felony.
This is still an ongoing investigation.
So, how was Carey involved?
The FBI received a tip that Carey posted a live video on Facebook from inside the Rotunda.
In an interview with an agent, Carey said she learned through social media that buses were traveling to the Trump rally on Jan. 6, 2021.
She signed up through an Eventbrite website and paid $115 for the bus ticket, which departed from the Seed to Table grocery store in North Naples at 6 a.m. the day prior to the rally.
Carey said she knew four to five other people from her church group out of the nearly 95 people traveling between the two busses.
Carey can be heard stating, "I’m putting my goggles on. I think they’re going to try to tear gas us,” in a video she filmed while walking into the East side doors of the Capitol. According to reports, she also recorded herself yelling, "We want Trump," “Taking back our house!” and “Stop the Steal!” at least eight times.
Inside the U.S. Capitol, Carey recorded another video of her saying, "We overtook the Capitol” and “We simply wanted to take our house back.” She added, “We want our republic back. We will not allow the Chinese to overtake the United States of America. We want to talk to Pelosi, we want to talk to Schumer, we want to talk to Pence.”
Although Carey said that the "protesters were being peaceful" to the agent during their interview, her video footage directly contradicts those claims.
She repeatedly filmed herself walking throughout the Capitol building and narrating the events as rioters broke through the barriers.
As she followed and ran up the steps on the East side of the U.S. Capitol, footage depicts Carey shouting, “Oh my gosh! We broke it! Go! Let’s Go! Oh my gosh. Oh my gosh. We’re going into the Capitol.”
